Nearly half of all fatalities of senior citizens and military veterans have occurred as a result of medication errors. Deteriorating vision, memory loss, and the use of multiple medications, often taken multiple times per day, have contributed to medication errors. Those who are vision-impaired and mentally challenged are the most likely to suffer as a result of medication errors.

It is estimated that $300 billion is spent annually in the United States on medication adherence incidents alone.

There are approximately 1.5 million people each year who suffer from injuries due to errors in prescription medications. Approximately 700,000 hospital visits and 120,000 hospital admissions occur each year as a result of adverse drug events.

Nonadherence can account for up to 50% of treatment failures, around 125,000 deaths, and up to 25% of hospitalizations each year in the United States.

An approximate 65% of senior citizens fail to take their medications as prescribed. Medication error is also listed as the cause of 23% of nursing home admissions.
